How to stop trading after 3 stop-losses

SentinelleTrader team · · 3 min

If your plan requires stopping after three SLs, define what counts as a loss, the counting period and the action at the third SL. Three is an example, not a recommended number for every trader.

In this guide
  1. Three total losses or three consecutive losses?
  2. Define what counts as an SL
  3. Prepare the rule in the dashboard

Three total losses or three consecutive losses?

These are different rules. A loss, win, loss, loss sequence contains three losses in total but only two consecutive losses. A daily SL counter is not the same as a losing-streak counter that resets after every win.

In SentinelleTrader, configure the maximum SL count and check the displayed counter. Do not assume that a winning trade erases a loss already counted. Set the reset time so you know when the next measurement period begins.

Define what counts as an SL

A near-break-even exit can finish slightly negative because of fees or slippage. The maximum SL count and minimum loss threshold therefore answer different questions.

For example, with a 0.5% threshold, a 0.1% loss does not count as an SL, while a loss of 0.5% or more counts as one. This threshold is illustrative. Excluding a small loss from the counter does not remove it from the account’s financial result.

Prepare the rule in the dashboard

  1. Select the correct MT4 or MT5 account.
  2. Set the maximum SL count to 3 if that is your plan’s rule.
  3. Define and understand the minimum loss threshold for counting an SL.
  4. Check the reset time and time zone.
  5. Save, then verify that the settings have been applied and protection is active.

A value entered in a form is not proof that protection is operating. Account connectivity and settings application must be confirmed. The MT4/MT5 automation guide explains these checks.

What happens at the third SL?

You should know the stopping procedure in advance. With an active SentinelleTrader lock, every new position is automatically closed until the configured reset. This does not necessarily mean the broker rejects the order before it opens: closing execution still depends on market conditions, the broker and connectivity.

Also plan how to manage positions and orders already present. Do not bypass the stop by switching devices or beginning another session on an unprotected account.

Why also keep a drawdown limit?

A loss count does not cap monetary losses. One large loss can exceed your budget before the third SL, while several small losses may remain below it. Daily drawdown monitoring complements the counter.

After the session, record counted losses, your decisions and any urge to restart. You can explore SentinelleTrader’s protections without changing your market-entry method.
